The MassGAP project was founded in the summer of 2002 for the purpose of increasing the number of women in high-level appointed positions in state government. The MWPC did an analysis of the gender composition of high ranking appointed positions in Massachusetts government. The data showed that only 30% of high-level positions were held by women. With those numbers in hand, the MWPC and the Alliance of Women’s and Business Professional Organizations co-founded the Massachusetts Government Appointments Project (MassGAP) to increase the number of women appointed to high-level positions in state government. The goal of the MassGAP project was to be a resource to the new administration by providing the resumes of qualified women to the administration. MassGAP sought to eliminate the excuse that government officials had made in the past—that they could not find qualified women when making high-level appointments. The MWPC continues to meet with state officials to monitor open positions and maintain statistics regarding the appointment of women.

The Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus is proud to be the lead sponsor of MassGAP. Please click on the logo below to go to the website.

MassGAP Success Stories

Ruth Bramson, Director of Human Resources, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, December, 2002

“Thanks to all of you at MWPC and the efforts of the MassGAP Project. I want to let you know that the MassGAP initiative has introduced one senior corporate executive who is now part of the new administration. I hope to play part in transforming the face of state government, particularly in my role as Director of Human Resources.”

Kristen Apgar, General Counsel for the Executive Office Health and Human Services.

"I wanted to let you know that I have been appointed General Counsel for the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. I feel certain that this wonderful – and very challenging – opportunity would not have happened without the support of the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus."
